What I Have Learned in 1 Year of College
So my first year of college ends within the next 2 weeks. I move out of the dorm in a couple days. Ive learned a bit about college, school, and life while at the university of Kansas, and i figure i can offer a little bit of this knowledge to anyone wanting it. There is no real order to the points.
There is more to come I'm sure, so check back in a day or two.
- Get a cell phone that works and that you can turn off in class, its annoying as hell when someone's cell phone goes off in class, and even more embarrassing when its yours.
- If you and your roommate have been up late drinking heavily in your dorm room, remember your keys when you go to the dining hall to get food. When the RAs are writing you up (and charging 20$) to unlock your door, speak a foreign language to each other (German works great) and they'll feel bad because they will think you're an international student.
- There were people who you hated in high school who found their way to your university. They will see you and want to say hi and etc. Dont make eye contact. You hated them then, they haven't changed and neither have you, avoid them at all costs. Being drunk and talking to them is also a big mistake, because they will find you more approachable.
- Drink alot of water everyday, not just after drinking. Being hydrated makes you happier (no really it does)
- Your parents are the ones paying for all of this, so thank them often and don't be a cock monger to them (Thanks mom and dad)
- Never, ever, drink on a night where you have a test the next day. Get in your room and fucking study, you're at school for a reason.
- the quote "You can retake the class but not the party" is a load of horse shit. There are other parties. Your grades come first while in college, no matter how many fuck-offs tell you different.
- If you're roommate happens to be a best friend, you will find them to be a giant douche at times, and vice-versa. It happens. You need to help them the most you can, and they need to help you. Support each other and drink with each other.
- Cheap alcohol, no matter how cheap it is, is always shit and should be avoided. Instead of drinking every night, drink once or twice on the weekend and drink the good stuff. Your body and taste buds will thank you. Your wallet will be indifferent.
- Get a fucking job. You have a SHIT ton of time after classes and studying, go earn some money, not all of your education and socializing should be put on your parents.
- Get to know your professors in your field (I.E engineering, History, German, etc), you can make a great friend and a mentor and someone to look up to.
- You don't need to participate in all sorts of little clubs and bullshit. If you see something you like then go for it. None of it is required and they're all looking for money.
- Greek-sorority and fraternity shit is the biggest waste of humanity of all time. They are for rich, pretty, stupid people who spend all day tanning on their mercades-benzes and talking on the phone or text messaging gossip after a long night of drinking and fucking. Avoid these people. Occasionally a normal person will slip into these disgusting rich-love ins, feel bad for them. These people are pricks.
- The quiet nerds are the coolest people on campus. They're the most down to earth (most of the time) and they dont text message or say dude every five seconds.
- The jocks of the university will be the cockiest people on earth, most are not there for an education. Some are alright, but they all think they're better than you. There are few student-athletes that are approachable and cool. Julian Wright was one of them. Thats about it.
- EVERYBODY IN KANSAS HATES JOHNSON COUNTY. When i say hate i mean HATE johnson county. Even though these people have the right and a damn good reason, they can go fuck themselves because johnson county keeps Kansas above being a hovel. Most of those little western cities have their streets, their single stop-light and their one cop car paid for by Johnson county or Kansas city residents.
- On the johnson county note, I don't hate johnson county, just all of blue valley and most of Shawnee mission, Olathe (except Olathe east) is the only place in Johnson county that is down to earth.
- Alcohol is the best drug there is, avoid the other drugs and pot. Alcohol you wake up with a hangover and thats all. Pot and the rest mess with you for a very long time and can keep you from getting a job.
- Avoid hard alcohol in large quantities, Beer is where its at.
There is more to come I'm sure, so check back in a day or two.

Eve of Destruction, Updates etc

I was optimistic about my grades this semester. Now I'm not so sure. But we'll see i have roughly 3 weeks left. Arbeit macht frei? that statement can be true. but probably not for me. Work is easy enough. In German we have a novel we're reading, called "Der Vorleser" and its a pretty philosophical work etc etc its good but we have to read literally 40 pages in a day. Its pretty simple German but it still takes FOREVER....so i didn't go to class and evidentially neither did half the people haha.
Ok so i have my first game to talk about on this blog thing: Eve of Destruction mod for Battlefield 2. To be honest its really freakin' good. I've played all those other Vietnam shooter games, like Viet Cong and (several others, the names slip me) and this one is as good as any. Theres only one or two really full servers that play the mod, and its a blast. The combat style is incredibly intense. Charlie pops up out of the grass all the damn time. If you're a Vietcong its hard as hell to kill an American because you're weapons are such shit. If you own Battlefield 2, you need to check this shit out.
There are of course plenty of bugs in the game that still need to be dealt with. Occasionally there are lag issues and spawn issues, but as a mod i understand it needs some work (and they're still working). The sounds also have some interesting bugs and the ambient sounds are annoying as fuck from time to time. My roommate and I play together and sometimes i hear the ambient sounds and he doesn't, then sometimes he hears them and i don't. The sounds for the weaponry is awesome. The problem is, it makes it sound like the weapon is next to your ear when its really 100 yards away. But it gives the feeling of intense combat, and by all means this game does just that. My favorite has to be the mortars, where you can sit and fire from a distance and follow the shell in. If trained in right on a spawn or an area of clustered marines (or that lone son-of-a-bitch sniper) then it is the most deadly weapon in the game. Watching the bodies fly in the air (as sick as that sounds) its a blast.
Intense shit
You've got marines picking off charlies at will, then the Vietcong will throw a grenade and assault out of the grassy rice paddy where you thought nothing was there. Boom your dead. Fuck!
Please remember I'm new at this gaming review stuff (hopefully, just maybe i can contribute (for $) to a gaming magazine someday, but all in all, this is a terribly written review, alas i am still hungover from the previous night of drinking (German party, plenty of good German beers). Either way it was my first shot, its no Penny Arcade or Gamespot, but i hope it provides whoever reads this (if anybody) a look from the point of view of the normal gamer. But this mod is great and you NEED to check it out!

First Post
No one will eve read this, I'm aware of that fact. However, i felt that perhaps starting a blog would be interesting, and I'm sure to share whatever it is i feel like i should share.
I'm a 19 year old college student in Lawrence, Kansas at KU studying German and History. I sort of live in the past as my main obsession is world war 2 German military stuff (but don't get me wrong I'm an ardent anti-Nazi and I am very open minded (being Buddhist i should) and I'm a huge liberal. I'm also, as the blog reveals, a gamer in every aspect of the word. I own a Nintendo DS, Wii, Super Nintendo, Gameboy, as well as a 1,300$ gaming computer and the like. Perhaps I will leave comments about games I've played and experienced etc etc.
Well, whoever reads this should be throughly bored, but I suppose I will update regularly once i figure out how all this works. If you like it then by all means...read on...
